Contour's Fluorinetic™ brand signifies a breakthrough advance in battery technology involving both multi-layered carbon nanomaterials and manufacturing processes. Although based on the popular Lithium/Polycarbon Monofluoride, or Li/(CF)n battery, Contour's Lithium/Carbon Fluoride, or Li/CFx battery affords significant improvements in gravimetric energy density (over 2x), volumetric energy density (up to 2x), power density (up to 8x) and operating temperature range (-60 to 160°C+ vs. -20 to 60°C). Contour's Li/CFx battery also affords similar significant improvements over other common chemistries, including Lithium/Manganese Dioxide, Lithium/Sulfur Dioxide and Lithium/Thionyl Chloride—exceeding all of them in both energy and power densities with equal or better performance in other areas.
The breakthrough advance involves the patented way fluorine is introduced into the carbon nanomaterials at the atomic level during the manufacturing process. The ability to alter the cathode's physical structure at the atomic level is what gives the CFx battery its "tunable" cathode that can be optimized for peak performance in specific applications in the consumer, industrial, medical, military and transportation markets. The Fluorinetic technology is available today in Contour's primary coin cell batteries, and will be available in other form factors.
Additional information about Li/CFx and its advantages relative to other established and research stage battery chemistries can be found in the followng presentation by Shmuel De-Leon.
